China: Shanghai residents queue for COVID jab as country records first death since May

Shanghai residents queued for their turn to receive doses of a COVID-19 vaccine at a vaccination centre in Shanghai on Thursday, as the country recorded its first death with the virus since May 2020.

The vaccination of the general public was given the green light by the Chinese authorities just a few weeks ago at the end of December 2020. The first vaccine to be approved has been developed by the state-owned Sinopharm.

A second vaccine, CoronaVac, developed by Sinovac, a Beijing-based biopharmaceutical company has also been given approval, albeit only for emergency use amongst high-risk recipients.

According to the Chinese-based news source Sina, over 600,000 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in Shanghai to-date.

China reported the first death from COVID-19 since May 2020, with the fatality occurring in Hebei Province, which surrounds Beijing, where new lockdowns were recently imposed amid a new outbreak of the virus.
