Indonesia has begun its nationwide mass rollout of the Sinovac vaccine amid a surge of cases of COVID-19 in Jakarta.
“Health workers are being vaccinated in South Jakarta district, 23,120 Health workers will be selected for vaccination,” said the Chief of South Jakarta Health District Dr Muhammad Helmi at a vaccination facility in the Jagakarsa Public Health centre where several people were seen waiting to be vaccinated.
Dr Muhammad Helmi also said the vaccination rollout would be carried out until January 28th, across several locations in South Jakarta organised and coordinated by local health offices.
This is the first time Sinovac Biotech vaccine is being used on a large scale outside of China.
The inoculation program comes as Jakarta’s deputy governor Ahmad Riza Patria urged citizens to take part in the program after announcing that people who refuse to be vaccinated could face fines up to 7 million Indonesian Rupiah ($497/ €410).
