A German government spokesperson said vaccines against COVID-19 were bringing hope but that the conditions in hospitals showed how serious the situation was. Ulrike Demmer was speaking at a news conference in Berlin on Wednesday.
“The federal chancellor has brought attention to the seriousness of the situation on numerous occasions. She expects that the coming weeks and months will be the most difficult of the pandemic,” said Demmer.
Germany’s health care system has been overwhelmed by the rising numbers of COVID infections with many hospitals at almost full capacity.
With contagion rates still above the government target, Merkel extended lockdown measures and tightened restrictions on private gatherings until January 31.
