Hundreds of protesters marched with lit torches against government-imposed coronavirus restrictions despite a nightly curfew in Marseille, on Tuesday evening.
Responding to a call by the French Communist Party and the CGT syndicate, crowds were captured marching at night time holding inflamed torches.
A night curfew is still in force in France with most of the country’s population required to stay at home past 20.00 (19.00 GMT). A 18.00 (17.00 GMT) curfew time has been implemented in the regions worst-affected by the coronavirus.
Unlike several European countries which maintained a strict lockdown over the holidays, France relaxed its restrictions, allowing residents to spend Christmas with their families, though it has since re-imposed a curfew in mainland France, to slow the spread of the virus.
France is nearing 3 million confirmed coronavirus cases with 68,000 deaths with COVID-19, according to Johns Hopkins University.
