China: Beijing says COVID-19 vaccines will be provided free of charge

The Chinese government will provide COVID-19 vaccines free of charge to the general public, according to an announcement made in Beijing on Saturday.

The Deputy Administrator of National Healthcare Security Administration Li Tao said that free vaccination is provided on the premise that residents are informed and that it would be carried out on a voluntary basis.

“The cost of the vaccine plus all the expenses such as vaccination services will be covered by the medical insurance fund and the government finance. The individual residents don’t need to pay anything out of their pocket,” Li Tao added.

The Vice Minister of National Health Commission Zeng Yixin said that China has administered more than 9 million COVID-19 vaccine doses so far. In total, over 7 million doses have been administered since mid-December.
